I had a conversation the other day with a client who said to me “I don’t even know if people read my blogs, there is probably no reason to write them” so I started listing off a few reasons why a blog is important. I thought maybe I would share a few of these with you. Now, I will not lie, sometimes I find myself struggling to find a topic to discuss with you. The beauty of blogging is that there are so many ways to portray different ideas. Yes, sometimes I write about the same topics over and over again when it comes to Marketing and branding, but I try to show my tribe different perspectives and angles you can approach your blog writing from in order to give it more credence. But to answer my client’s question, yes, you should continue to write blogs.

First let’s start with what a blog is for all you newbies out there. A blog is a form of content that is writing more in an informational or conversational style. It can be housed on your website or a separate website and its intent is really to give your audience insight into your thoughts and perspectives on a number of topics pertaining to your area of expertise or business. Blogs can be fun and witty, but they also serve other businesses purposes as well.

A very basic reason why blogs for an entrepreneur might be important is consistency and self-discipline. I have committed to writing 1 blog per week to ensure that my brand remains consistent in this aspect and that my audience always has fresh content to read on a weekly basis. It is also a practice in discipline for me and serves as a reminder that I made a commitment to my audience and therefore I need to be committed to ensuring that my promise gets fulfilled. As a business owner, self-discipline is very important and will reveal itself in other parts of your business. This is one basic way to ensure you stick to a schedule, are sharing your candid thoughts and story with your audience and are showing that brand is consistent in the products and services it offers.

Another important reason to write blogs is around attracting new audiences to your site. If your blog provides educational content as an example, as people search for these topics, your blog could appear in searches around said topic. If the reader feels connected to your thoughts and content, you may have just gained a new audience member. That audience member could ultimately end up being one of your customers.

Blogs are great for Search Engine Optimization. You might be asking what is Search Engine Optimization and what does it have to do with me?  Search Engine Optimization is a means by which people can find your content when they crawl search engines like google or Bing. These sites use a ranking system to determine if you are on the first page a person sees when they search a word or a topic or the last page. The more content you produce, the more likely you are to end up closer to page 1. By doing things like integrating keywords or even referencing other people’s writing and articles in your content and having them do that back in regard to your content will increase your visibility and ranking on search engines. Many people today still use search as a means to find content, products, services and ideas that they need so why not be sure that you are showing up for them when they are looking for the things that you offer?

Blogs are a great opportunity to show what you or your business can do. As an example, if you are a content writer, your blog is a great way for people who are looking for content to understand your tone, your style and how you connect with your audiences. Now, you might be thinking of course that works for content but what if I am a cook per se. Well, your blog could be a great place to feature new recipes or reviews of different recipes or restaurants that you have tried. In either case, your writing could make you a subject matter expert in your space which will lead to increased opportunities and exposure for you.

A blog is a great storytelling tool. Part of being a good marketer is having a story to tell. Storytelling gives your audience insight into you in a way that is relatable and fun to them. It allows them to connect with you on a different level. As a blog writer or storyteller, you create an experience for your audience where they can transcend into different worlds or even have a better understanding of someone’s journey or perspective. Your blog can be a collection of stories that people will read just to learn more about you.
